Pupils from Years 3 to 6 are dropped off at the main school gate for entry to school between 8.45 and 8.55am
Pick-up is also at the main school gate, at 3.30pm

All primary school pupils' lunches are free - please order your child's choice on Parentpay. Pupils can bring in a packed lunch if preferred.
Please provide your child with at least one full drinks bottle of water, to be brought home for washing at the end of each day. PLEASE remember to label the bottle (and all other belongings) with your child's name. Thank you.
If your child would like to bring in their own snack, please can you ensure it is a healthy snack e.g. fruit or vegetables (no crisps, chocolate, biscuits or sweets or nuts). Thank you.

Curriculum for Wales
The Curriculum consists of What Matters Statements which are found within these Six Areas of Learning
Expressive Arts (this spans five disciplines: art, dance, drama, film and digital media and music)
Health and Wellbeing (this includes PE)
Humanities (this Area encompasses geography; history; religion, values and ethics; business studies and social studies)
Languages, Literacy and Communication (which aims to support learning across the whole curriculum and to enable learners to gain knowledge and skills in Welsh, English and international languages as well as in literature)
Maths and Numeracy
Science and Technology This area draws on the disciplines of biology, chemistry, computer science, design and technology, and physics to enhance learners’ knowledge and understanding of the world.
These are carefully planned within a broad and balanced curriculum.
Literacy
Alongside weekly reading, spelling and handwriting work, plus Welsh sessions, Year 5 pupils also learn French. Their work in the Roses and Royals learning project involves historical research and composing an information leaflet on a historical personage from the 16th century. Alchemy Island gives freedom to the imagination as pupils explore imaginary places, using riddles as clues, while Scream Machine gives rise to loop-shaped poetry.

Helpwr Heddiw session daily, in which the teacher chooses a helper to assist with Welsh games, vocabulary and commands for that day

Maths & Numeracy
Pupils work on Reasoning, Numeracy & Outer Numeracy, with Maths tests available for practice. Roses and Royals provides opportunities to work in detail on dates and chronology, and Alchemy Island uses coordinates and map work in its explorations.
Health & Wellbeing
Year 5 pupils enjoy weekly PE/Dance/Gymnastics lessons and run the daily mile on the middle playground. Pupils also have regular Jigsaw and Outdoor Learning sessions, and some pupils receive individual Thrive sessions. Year 5 pupils also receive cycling safety and proficiency training during the school year.
Science & Technology
Elements of Science come into all the learning projects, e.g. in looking at the way people lived in the Tudor age and the hazards of disease and lack of hygiene; Alchemy Island explores 'alchemy' as a subject, including experiments to create gold. The focus of Scream Machine is 'forces'. Pupils learn about cam mechanisms, pendulums, pulleys and prototypes and ultimately build their own death-defying new drop ride for their theme park.
Humanities
Geography, and in particular the use of maps, features heavily in Year 5. Alchemy Island uses imaginary maps, Roses and Royals uses real, historical maps and Scream Machine looks at contemporary locations of theme parks and the kinds of maps used within parks for visitors to find their way around.
Roses and Royals is clearly a historical learning project, exploring life in Tudor times, and some kings and queens from the 16th century.
Religious Education is a weekly area of learning and community engagement at Lakeside, with daily assemblies exploring the many religious and other festivals we mark at school. Pupils learn about the Christian stories of Christmas and Easter, Ramadan and Eid ul-Fitr, plus Eid ul-Adha. We celebrate Chinese New Year with decorations and dressing up, and Diwali with dance and craft workshops, and create assemblies and videos to mark festivals such as Yom Kippur, Vaisakhi and Christingle.
Expressive Arts
The mini project Tints, Tones & Shades explores the use of colour and shading in art, and pupils emulate the Welsh artist Stan Rosenthal for Eisteddfod competitions. Year 5 children enjoy Charanga music sessions and learn Welsh folk dancing during the Spring Term. In Jigsaw sessions, pupils are encouraged to use role-play to explore emotions and worries that they may have.
Physical Education / Ymarfer Corff
PE and Kit
Our day for PE and Games is Wednesday
Please could children wear their PE kit into school on this day. A navy T-shirt and navy blue shorts are required and trainers or similar footwear. Navy t-shirts may be purchased from YC Sports. During colder weather, tracksuits or other warm clothing may be worn.
Learning Areas
We use the Big Hall for lunches, assemblies & PE lessons
Pupils have regular Outdoor Learning sessions. In addition to which, we undertake many activities that involve being out exploring the wider school environment, e.g. collecting natural items, drawing maps etc. Learners are given the opportunity to explore and discover various aspects of the outside environment. The outdoor activities planned often link to their indoor learning projects.
During the school year, Year 5 pupils attend the Urdd Centre in Llangrannog (or an alternative residential centre) and a Theme Park.
The cycling safety and proficiency training is led by Cardiff Council
Communication, and helping your child at home / Cyfatherbu a helpu
Children access work in the Year 5 Google Classroom, and are able to post on the stream to ask questions.
Staff greet the children every morning in the classroom. Parents have an opportunity to speak to staff at the end of the day and can also send messages via Lakeside School email. We may not check SEESAW messages in the morning or during the day, so if the message is important for that day, please telephone or email the school.
Homework
In our Google Classroom, Maths activities are posted most days for the children to complete in lessons and these can be consolidated at home for those wishing to do extra practice. Children can also practise their timetables in 'TT Rockstars'.
Big Maths
Big Maths 'Clic', 'Safe' and 'Learn its' tests will take place weekly online in school. Parents/guardians are able to support their child's learning by practising the tests we have put into Google Classroom.
Maths Reinforcement
Your child can continue to develop the maths skills taught each week, by accessing their own 'Maths world' at Active Learn. Each child has been given a username and password. The school code is qlq7.
Spellings
Spellings will be set in Google Classroom every other Friday; children will be given a list of words to learn, using a different strategy. This can also be practised in J2Blast in HWB.
Reading
Reading books will be provided on Active Learn, online.
This academic year we will be providing your child with a weekly reading book online using their 'Active Learn' account. The children have been shown how to access the books, how to read them, and answer the comprehension questions that accompany them. Children are welcome to bring in books from home to read in school, but they will need to be kept in their school bag or class folder. Please encourage your child to read at home as much as possible, whether it be books, comics or even instruction manuals.

There will be Parent/Carer sharing sessions to which parents are invited to see what the children have been learning. These usually take place at Christmas and during the Spring Term
