Curriculum for Wales
The Curriculum consists of What Matters Statements which are found within these Six Areas of Learning
Expressive Arts (this spans five disciplines: art, dance, drama, film and digital media and music)
Health and Wellbeing (this includes PE)
Humanities (this Area encompasses geography; history; religion, values and ethics; business studies and social studies)
Languages, Literacy and Communication (which aims to support learning across the whole curriculum and to enable learners to gain knowledge and skills in Welsh, English and international languages as well as in literature)
Maths and Numeracy
Science and Technology This area draws on the disciplines of biology, chemistry, computer science, design and technology, and physics to enhance learners’ knowledge and understanding of the world.
These are carefully planned within a broad and balanced curriculum.
Literacy
Alongside weekly/daily reading, spelling, handwriting and Welsh, children will access a wide range of literacy related activities through their learning projects. For example, within Myths & Legends, Year 3 will explore the difference between a myth and a legend, read traditional Welsh myths and legends, and learn how to write their own. Pupils explore the human story of volcanic eruptions in Tremors, learning about and re-telling the lives of people caught up in the eruption of Vesuvius in Pompeii.
Welsh
Helpwr Heddiw session daily, in which the teacher chooses a helper to assist with Welsh games, vocabulary and commands for that day.

Maths & Numeracy
Pupils learn and practice Maths every day, with weekly tests. We use a range of physical resources, e.g. Diennes, Numicon, multi-link, counting items etc. to develop their visual and pictorial learning skills. The focus will be on Number until Autumn half term, then Reasoning will be added to the Maths focus.
Health & Wellbeing
Scrumdiddlyumptious explores healthy eating, hygiene and healthy habits.
Year 3 pupils enjoy weekly PE lessons, regular Outdoor Learning sessions and run the daily mile on the playground. Pupils also have regular Jigsaw sessions and some pupils receive individual Thrive sessions with Miss Clarke.
Science & Technology
During Flow, Tremors and Ammonites, pupils learn about the water cycle, natural disasters with a focus on volcanoes and what happens before, during and after an eruption. Year 3 pupils learn about geology when they study ammonites.
Humanities
Geography comes into all the Year 3 learning projects as pupils learn about food from across the world, and how it is moved around the planet. Tremors and Flow look at volcanoes and rivers everywhere on Earth. Pupils learn about human and physical geography through these projects, looking at the wider world and at the counties and cities of the UK.
Tremors takes the eruption of Vesuvius in Pompeii as an opportunity to explore the human effects of volcanic eruptions.
Religious Education is a weekly area of learning and community engagement at Lakeside, with daily assemblies exploring the many religious and other festivals we mark at school. Pupils learn about the Christian stories of Christmas and Easter, Ramadan and Eid ul-Fitr, plus Eid ul-Adha. We celebrate Chinese New Year with decorations and dressing up, and Diwali with dance and craft workshops, and create assemblies and videos to mark festivals such as Yom Kippur, Vaisakhi and Christingle.
Expressive Arts
Each learning project provides opportunities for art and craft, including sculpture, print-making, colour theory and photography. Dramatic re-enactment of stories and events takes place, such as in the story of Pompeii.
Physical Education / Ymarfer Corff
Pupils enjoy weekly PE sessions and are asked to come to school in their kit on their PE day. The kit consists of navy/black joggers, shorts or leggings and a navy/ white t-shirt and a school jumper for warmth.
PE sessions will take place every Friday, either outside or in the hall.
Learning Areas / Mannau Dysgu
Classroom: children sit in groups in the classroom. There is also an intervention area.
Outdoor Area: children are given opportunities to explore and discover various aspects of their natural environment outside. The outdoor activities planned often link to their indoor learning projects.
Year 3 visit a local supermarket as part of their Scrumdiddlyumptious project; they also visit Cardiff Museum and the seaside.
Year 3 pupils undertake two weeks of swimming lessons during the school year at a local swimming pool.
Communication, and helping your child at home
Year 3 uses the platform Seesaw as a tool for home school communication as well as setting homework.
We will send out any announcements and reminders using the messaging part of Seesaw.
Parents & Carers can also use the messaging part of Seesaw to communicate with class teachers.
Staff dismiss the children at the end of the day. Parents have an opportunity to speak to staff then and can also send messages via Seesaw or Lakeside School email. Please be mindful that teachers may not see messages during the teaching day, so please telephone the office for urgent messages.
Homework
Homework will be set every week on Seesaw.
Reading
Children will take home a reading book in their book bags weekly.
Additional books will be provided on Active Learn online (Bug Club). The children have been shown how to access the books and how to read them, and answer the comprehension questions that accompany them. Please encourage your child to read at home for at least 20 mins per day. We encourage reading as much as possible, whether it be books, comics or even instruction manuals.
Maths
Big Maths 'CLIC', 'SAFE' and 'Learn its' tests will take place weekly online in school. Additionally, children can have a go at the Big Maths/CLIC questions found on the school website, under class pages.
