Dear Parents/Carers,

It’s hard to believe that this will be the last Parentmail of the 2023-24 school year (next week’s newsletter will be a Dragonflyer).  Just one week left to go in a busy and wonderful year!

A big thank you to Year 6 parents and carers who joined us to enjoy Year 6 performing The Lion King this week.  There were tears, laughter and lots of applause and cheering.  Thank you to Year 6 pupils, staff and parents/carers for your support and help with the show.  A video recording was made of the performance and will be made available to families shortly.

Well done to our girls’ football team who played three Howells teams this week, losing one match and winning two!  Well done to them!  Thank you also to the netball coaches who invited parents/carers in to play against their children and gave awards to the Year 6 leavers today – a lovely final session in a successful year.

PTA news

The total made at the Summer Fair was £1.847.38!!!!!

A huge thank you to everyone that helped set up/manage a stall, make, paint, mend things, tidy away, and everything in between, and of course all who attended the Fair and spent their money.  These events are only possible with the help of everyone involved, and seeing how much the children enjoyed it, it was totally worth it.

While the Lakeside pupils’ maths is excellent, staff not so much – we miscounted the takings from the Eid Cakes and Savouries Sale – the actual amount raised was a wonderful £403.07!  Sorry for the mistake, but at least it was in the right direction.

Thank you to parents/carers of Nursery and Year 3 to 6 pupils for your support for the year groups’ Sports Days.  It was wonderful to be able to hold the Nursery Sports Days on the school field – there were great competitions and the children had a lovely time.  Thanks to Nursery staff for organising these fun events.  The Year 3 to 6 Sports Day was excellent as usual, with a real competitive spirit among the children and great support from families.  Thanks to parents/carers who walked back to school with us, to the staff for all their hard work, and to Mr Vanstone for organising the event.

Some wonderful news – Lakeside has achieved the Cymraeg Campus Silver Award for excellent Welsh work throughout the school!  We achieved the Bronze Award just before lockdown and yesterday we were given the Silver.  Many thanks to Miss Fry, Mrs Nessbert and especially Criw Cymraeg for all their hard work on this.

It was wonderful to see so many of you at the Summer Fair today!  Though the weather was very threatening throughout, the rain didn’t spoil anything.  Thank you to the PTA for organising it and to all who donated and helped.  Thanks to the choir and Dancefit for entertaining us, and to the Taekwondo students for their demonstration.

Transition Day – Thursday 11^th June

Year 6 pupils who are attending Cardiff High School in September will go straight to Cardiff High on both Transition Days.   Year 6 pupils not attending CHS in September and ALL other pupils are to go to their usual classrooms for registration on Thursday.  They will then be escorted to their new classrooms by teachers.

Wednesday 17^th July

Pupils are welcome to wear yellow or bright colours to school on Wednesday 17^th as this is the day of the official opening of Ty Bronwen, our Wellbeing Pod.  There will also be Bronwen’s Wish T-shirts in children’s sizes for sale on the school gate at the end of next week at a cost of £8 each, if pupils wish to wear one of these.

Thank you very much to the school choir and their parents/carers for attending the music service showcase at Whitchurch High School on Tuesday evening.  We look forward to hearing the choir performing at the Summer Fair on Friday.

Thank you to Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 parents/carers for supporting your children’s Sports Day today.  It was a lovely event and very well attended.  I’m grateful to the staff for running everything so smoothly and also to the Year 5 pupils who accompanied the staff and helped a great deal.  Looking forward to the Nursery, Wellbeing Class and Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 Sports Days next week.

A huge thank you to Coed Caerdydd and their volunteers for clearing the raised beds and area around Ty Bronwen.  We’ve found several apple trees so we’re looking forward to a bumper harvest in the autumn!

Thank you so much to all who donated and organised last Friday’s Eid Cakes and Savouries Sale.  It was a lovely and very popular event, and we’re delighted to report that an outstanding £303.07 was raised for the school!

Good luck to the netball team for today’s match against Marlborough which is under way right now!

We’re all looking forward to the Eid Cakes and Savouries Sale after school today – hope to see you there when I stock up on delicious treats!  The Sale is in conjunction with the PTA and all proceeds will go to the school.

Thank you to all who supported the Lions Football Tournament at Lakeside on Saturday.  It was a great event and very well attended.  Thanks to the PTA for providing drinks and snacks and to Mr Carey’s sister for the freebies from Morrisons.

Congratulations to the footballers who took part in the Caerphilly Schools’ Cup tournament today – well done on coming second out of 8 teams!

A big thank you to Nick Lukaris at Terra Nova Café in Roath Park.  Our Criw Cymraeg pupil group translated the café’s menu into Welsh and we went on a little trip to deliver the menu to them.  Mr L gave us free drinks and the pizzas and cakes were delicious.  Thank you to Terra Nova for the welcome and to Criw Cymraeg for all their hard work this year!

Reception to Year 2 Sports Day @ NIAC – Friday 28^th June

We’re all looking forward to the Reception to Year 2 Sports Day, which takes place at the National Indoor Athletic Centre at Cardiff Met on Friday 28^th June from 9am to 11.45am.  Parents/carers will have received information about arrangements – please inform your child’s class teacher if you need to know more.  If you wish your child to have a school dinner on this day, you will need to book the Grab bag option. Thank you.

Dancefit

The last Dancefit session will take place on Wednesday 3^rd July.  Members of the club will give a short performance and receive certificates at the PTA Summer Fayre on Friday 5^th July.

The PTA held a plant and crafts sale on Friday after school, plus an extra opportunity to buy on Monday.  Thanks for all the donations and to all who supported the sales, and of course thanks to the PTA for organising it.

Lakeside’s Got Talent!

Our annual talent contest will take place on Tuesday 16^th July – pupils from Years 2 to 6 can enter, they are judged by the Pupil Leadership Team, and the whole school will be the audience.

Autumn Term 2024

A HUGE thank you to parent Rhys Thomas, his dad and his team for making holes in our playground (at our invitation!) for our new netball and basketball posts – your time, cement, equipment and willingness to help are much appreciated!  Thanks to the PTA for paying for all the posts, goals and new sports equipment, and in particular to Charlotte Taylor, who co-ordinated it all, and joined another volunteer for the dreaded job of sorting the PE cupboard!  Thanks also to Mr Carey and even more parent-volunteers for putting together the ball cages for storage in the PE cupboard and the wonderful basketball nets and backboards.  I’m delighted to report that when the sun came out today pupils delightedly played basketball – very well in some cases – another team perhaps?!

Today (Friday) is Day of Welcome, prior to Refugee Week next week.  Pupils enjoyed various associated activities throughout the day, including live events of stories and items about Day of Welcome.  Our School Council have made a video to welcome new pupils to Lakeside.  This is based on a welcome letter they wrote.  You can view the video here: https://lakeside-primary-school-cardiff.primarysite.media/media/welcome-to-lakeside  Thank you to the School Council members for all their hard work on this.

Eid ul-Adha

We wish all families who are celebrating Eid ul-Adha early next week a pleasant and enjoyable celebration!  Thank you for our lovely hamper of treats – the staff are delighted!

Lions Football Tournament – tomorrow (Saturday 15^th June 10am – 1pm)

The Lions Football Tournament takes place at Lakeside tomorrow – all are welcome to come and watch two Lakeside teams, and many others.  Special thanks to Mr Carey’s sister, who works at Morrisons and has provided drinks and snacks for sale at the event.  Good luck Lakeside, and many thanks to all involved.

Autumn Term 2024

It was lovely to welcome everyone back to school this week for the final half term of the school year.  We’ve had some lovely dry weather and this has meant that the PTA-funded playground markings could go ahead this week.  The KS2 playgrounds look great and everyone is looking forward to using our new netball and basketball hoops, cricket crease markings and five-a-side pitch and goals.  Thank you to the PTA for all their hard work arranging this and of course for paying for it all.

Many of you will have noticed that the paved area outside the main school gates has now been tarmacked by the council.  It looks much better and is very even, so is safer.

Reception and Year 4 pupils enjoyed wonderful trips this week – to Cefn Mably Farm and Bristol Aquarium.  A very animal-oriented week of visits for Lakeside pupils.

Also this week, Mrs Tanner took a group of pupils to a Lego League Challenge.  The group have been preparing for a number of weeks, building Lego machines and programming robots to work them.  The Lakeside pupils won the Robot Design Award for the best Lego robot!  Huge congratulations and well done to them.

Sun Safe Schools

The Lakeside Citizens have completed their Sun Safe video, which will form part of our accreditation for our annual Sun Safe Schools Award.  The video explains about how we need to take care when exposing ourselves to the sun and how to protect ourselves from harmful rays.  You can view the video via the link in the Parentmail emailed to you on Friday 7^th June.   

PTA News

• Thank you so those of you who attended last night’s PTA quiz.  It was a great night, attended by over 90 guests, and the quiz was based on the school’s learning projects – ingenious!  Special thanks to Gemma Walsh for being an outstanding quiz master.  We’re all looking forward to the next one!  We’re delighted to report that £1401.03 was raised!!!!

Monday 20^th May is World Bee Day and pupils and staff are invited to wear bright colours / flowery patterns to school if they want to.

Thank you to the PTA for organising Monday’s Cake Sale, which raised £155.  Thanks to families for all the donations and for buying the lovely cakes!

Congratulations to the Lakeside football teams who played Rhiwbeina Primary on Thursday.  They showed excellent teamwork and football skills - the A team won 1-0 and the B team won 2-0!  Mrs Vanstone wants to say a huge thank you to parents and carers for their fantastic support for the team and their matches.  Well done everyone!

Good luck to the Year 6 Lakeside netball team for their match against Lisvane this evening, and to both Year 5 and Year 6 teams for their matches against Roath Park next Thursday (23^rd May)!

And finally… thank you to the family who donated a lovely wooden kitchen to Year 3, following their appeal for equipment and toys.  Great excitement at school for this – and that was just the adults 😊

Book Fair: Monday 20^th and Tuesday 21^st May

The Book Fair continues next week.  Pupils and parents/carers can visit to purchase books between 3.15 and 4.15pm. Card purchases only for the Book Sale. Thank you.

Seren a Sbarc Challenges

As part of our work toward the Cymraeg Campus Silver Award, Criw Cymraeg shared some fun activities with the whole school in assembly this morning.  These vary from learning Welsh on Duolingo to cooking Welsh food as a family, and a lot more.  The challenges are attached.  Criw Cymraeg would love to see the results of some of the challenges so please feel free to email photos/videos to criwcymraeg@lakesideprm.cardiff.sch.uk Thank you!

• The very rainy PTA Cake Sale on Monday raised a wonderful £155.  All monies will be spent on sports equipment for the school.
• PTA Quiz Night – Thursday 6^th June – in the big school hall: 7.30pm for 8pm start.  The PTA are excited to bring back the quiz night to the parents and carers of Lakeside!!!  Quiz teams of up to 6 people are welcome so you can form your team in advance or come along and join a team on the night. Don't worry about coming on your own - this will be a friendly, fun and inclusive quiz for all.

Ticket price is £5 and this will include nibbles and snacks on your table. Please let us know if you have any allergies or dietary requirements.  Tickets are limited so please get yours early before they sell out! Sales will end on Friday 24 May.  Please purchase tickets via Parentpay.  There will be a section of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks to purchase at our cash bar.  Poster attached.

• PTA Plant Sale – Friday 14^th June – donations welcomed from Monday 10^th June.  We’re also looking for small craft donations that will be priced 50p - £2.50.  So if anyone has knitting / crochet / crafting skills of any sort, that would be wonderful!   The theme is ‘Garden’ but any craft would be welcomed!

The most important bit of news we have this week is that Mrs Evans (Year 1 teacher) has had a baby girl!  Both mum and baby are doing well and we’re sure that you will join us in sending huge congratulations and warm wishes to Mrs Evans, her husband and their new addition.

It’s been lovely to see some real summer weather this week – thank you for sending your children to school with sunscreen, hats and sunglasses. Please remember to ensure that your child has a water bottle with them, which can be refilled in school.

We’re delighted to report that the Year 5 and Year 6 pupils who went on the residential visit to Abernant have had a wonderful time, and we look forward to welcoming them back later today.  Those who stayed at school enjoyed lots of off-timetable activities, including a visit to Roath Park, a Dance and Anatomy of Movement workshop at Cardiff Met, arts and crafts and sports such as football, tennis and cricket.

A busy week to look forward to next week with two trips (Year 1 and Year 2), the arrival of the Book Fair and a netball match against Lisvane Primary – let’s hope that the weather stays pleasant for the trips and netball match!

Book Fair: Friday 17^th May to Tuesday 21^st May

Next week, the Book Fair arrives in school.  Pupils and parents/carers can visit to purchase books on Friday 17^th, Monday 20^th and Tuesday 21^st of May between 3.15 and 4.15pm.  Card purchases only for the Book Sale.

PTA Quiz Night – Thursday 6^th June

Get swotting ready for the Quiz Night which is confirmed as taking place on Thursday evening, 6^th June.  There will be a cash bar, and the event will take place in the big school hall.  Ticket information to follow.

PTA Plant Sale – Friday 14^th June

Calling all grandparents, parents and children!  Following our successful Seed Sale, we know that many of you have been sowing and growing busily, and the PTA plant sale will take place on Friday 14^th June.  Please donate seedlings and plants that week – there’s still time to sow!

We’re also looking for small craft donations that will be priced 50p - £2.50.  So if anyone has knitting / crochet / crafting skills of any sort, that would be wonderful!   The theme is ‘Garden’ but any craft would be welcomed!

Dear Parents/Carers,

We enjoyed our last two year-group sharing sessions this week.  Year 6 took us through the history of the Welsh language, the story of Cantre’r Gwaelod and a Welsh lesson for parents/carers.  We were all very impressed with their Welsh language skills and their good listening!

Year 3 parents/carers were told the story of Pompeii, complete with video and scary sound effects.  Following this they helped their children to write newspaper headlines about the eruption, and witnessed their own volcanic eruptions outside!

Year 5 Debating Competition

Three Year 5 pupils took part in the Howells School Debating Competition – and they won!  HUGE congratulations to them (they know who they are) and well done for their hard work – Mrs Tanner, Mrs Vanstone, and everyone at Lakeside are really proud of them.

LAKESIDE TRANSITION DAY and Year 6 pupils transitioning to Cardiff High School

Cardiff High have given us two dates for Year 6 transition visits.  They are:

Friday 12^th July

Lakeside’s Transition Day will take place on Thursday 11^th July.  On this day all pupils, except those in Year 6 who are visiting Cardiff High School, will go to their usual classes for registration then spend some time in next year’s classroom with next year’s teacher.

Arrangements for Year 6 pupils going to Cardiff High School will be available closer to the date of the transition days.

Uniform sale

The PTA’s Uniform Sale last week raised a brilliant £180.  Thanks for all the donations and to those who bought uniforms, and a big thank you yet again to the PTA for organising the sale.

It was a pleasure to welcome Reception parents and carers to the sharing session this week.  Another lovely session in which the pupils could share their work and experiences, and parents/carers could spend time finding out what their children have been learning.

It’s been very nice to see so many of you in school for your teacher consultations this week and thank you to families who joined us for the Year 2 and Year 4 sharing sessions which were informative, enjoyable and musical.  There are three sessions left: Reception next week (April 24^th), Year 6 on April 30^th and Year 3 on 2^nd May.

We were all disappointed that we had to cancel the Reception and Year 1 trips on Monday due to the high winds and rain, but the good news is that the Reception trip to Barry Island is now going ahead on Monday and the Year 1 trip has been rescheduled to Monday 13^th May.

PTA Seed and Book Sale

It was wonderful to see so many of you at the PTA Seed and Book Sale today.  There were several tables of high-quality books available for sale, alongside lots of different types of seeds.  There was compost for sale, face painting and bee-related items like book-markers.  In the Winnie the Pooh Garden, PTA members were showing children and parents how to plant their seeds.  The sun was shining and it was a lovely event.  Thank you for all your donations of children’s books and Kinder egg pods and also a huge thank you to Pugh’s Garden Centre in Radyr for their generous donation of compost for the sale.  Finally, thank you so much to the PTA for this lovely event.  We look forward to seeing all the flowers and vegetables that you grow!

I have received an appeal from Year 3 pupils for items that they would like for their classes and the outdoor area.  They asked me to ask families if they have any of the items listed below that they no longer use, and could donate please. 

The list: small bean bags, musical instruments, dressing-up clothes.  Pretend money, food, tea set, plates, cutlery, a medical bag, construction bricks (all sizes) and kitchen items.  Arts & crafts, Lego/Duplo, chalk, loom bands and a sand tray.  Skipping ropes, ankle skippers, frisbees, hula hoops, cup-and-ball sets and soft cricket equipment.   Flowers/plants/gardening area items and board games.

PTA Seed and Book Sale - Friday 19^th April after school

School Nursing Text Service

Cardiff & Vale Health Board have asked us to share the attached poster with parents of pupils from Reception to Year 6, giving details of the School Nurse text service.  The service runs Mon-Fri 08:30 - 16:00 and also in the school holidays.

I’m delighted to announce that last week’s PTA Cake Sale raised an excellent £292.90 – thank you to the PTA for organising the event, all who donated cakes, all the helpers, and of course to all of you who bought cakes!

Our Comic Relief collection and Year 5 charity sale raised an amazing £785.61! Staff and children enjoyed a fab day at school with the Year 5 charity sale taking place in the morning and a very enthusiastic netball match in the afternoon between staff and pupils! Huge thanks to our netball Mums for organising the event.

Thank you for your continuing generosity and in advance for any food donations you can make for the Food Bank at Emmanuel Baptist Church in Gabalfa.  Items will be collected at the main gate from Monday to Thursday mornings next week.  The church has let us know that they have run out of tinned vegetables (sweetcorn, carrots, peas), tinned meat/meat dishes (corned beef, stewed meat, meat curry, meatballs), rice, squash, coffee, and instant noodles.

All donations of non-perishable items (food, toiletries, cleaning products, etc.) will be most gratefully received, and we’re hoping to get a few Easter eggs donated too.  Thank you.

Inspection

Our school inspection is taking place next week. There is a meeting for parents / carers on Monday 18^th March at 3-45 in the Big Hall. Please book in to use our creche facility if you would like to attend.

World Book Day

Thank you for joining in World Book Day.  The children enjoyed wearing their comfy clothes and relaxing to read books during the day.  Each child should by now have received a £1 Book Token.  These can be exchanged for books priced £1, which are available in supermarkets, or can be used for £1 off other children’s books.

Cake Sale

Many thanks to the Years 3 and 6 and all who have donated cakes, to the PTA for organising the sale and to all volunteers who are helping.  Please see the attached flyer with details of a PTA meeting which is on Wed 20th March, 7.30pm at Heath Park Community Hall.

Inspection

The Inspection team have also requested the opportunity to meet with parents as part of the inspection process. Therefore, we would like to invite you to attend a meeting with members of the inspection team in the Hall on Monday 18^th March between 3:45 p.m. and 4:45 p.m. The meeting is open to all parents/carers of pupils at Lakeside Primary and is an opportunity for you to share your views about the school.

To help facilitate your attendance at this meeting, there will be a creche facility available for any children who currently attend Lakeside (Nursery to Year 6).  A booking form for this will be shared with you on Monday 11^th.

Swimming and Netball

We wish Year 3 pupils well for next week as they embark on Week 1 of their Swimming Training and good luck to the school Netball team who are playing two matches on Friday – one against staff for Comic Relief and another against Marlborough Primary.  Good luck with both!!!

Parent Sharing sessions

Thank you to parents/carers who joined us for the Year 1 Sharing Session this week.  It was a pleasure to welcome you to school to enjoy your children sharing their recent work with you.  I look forward to seeing Year 5 parents/carers at their sharing session next week on Thursday 14^th March.  Please come to the upper school (KS2) gate for entry between 9am and 9.30am.

School Choir Concert - Thursday 14^th March at 6.30pm

Lakeside School Choir is joining the Cardiff music service for a concert in the Dutch Barn at Whitchurch High School.  The concert starts at 6.30pm and is scheduled to end at 8pm.  Tickets are first-come-first-served on the door.

Comic Relief Day – Friday 15^th March

For Comic Relief Day this year, pupils and staff are invited to wear odd shoes and/or odd socks.  On the afternoon of the 15^th the school netball team will play a match against staff.  We fear humiliation for Lakeside staff on this one!  A big thank you to the parent volunteers who run the netball team for organising this match.

On the morning of the 15^th Year 5 pupils will run stalls to sell all kinds of things to raise money for Comic Relief.  Last year they sold jewellery, sweets, cakes, drinks, and there were games and other fun activities.  Pupils in Years 3, 4 and 6 will visit the stalls during the morning of the 15^th, and will need money for this in addition to any donations made to Comic Relief on the gate.

Parent/Carer Consultations

The re-scheduled parent/carer consultations will take place on Tuesday 9^th and Wednesday 10^th April.  Details of the booking link and instructions on how to book will be shared.  The booking system will open at 6pm next Monday – Monday 11^th March.  Thank you.

Food Bank Easter donations

The Food Bank at Emmanuel Baptist Church in Gabalfa are really grateful that we are holding another collection for them and have let us know that they have run out of the following items:

• Tinned vegetables: sweetcorn, carrots, peas
• Tinned meat/meat dishes: corned beef, stewed meat, meat curry, meatballs
• Rice
• Squash
• Coffee
• Instant Noodles

Of course, any donations of non-perishable items (food, toiletries, cleaning products, etc.) will be most gratefully received, and we’re hoping to get a few Easter eggs donated too.  Donations can be brought to the school gate in the mornings from Monday 18^th March.  Thank you in advance for your generosity.

It’s been a very exciting week at Lakeside, as you know, culminating in Eisteddfods for Reception to Year 2 pupils, and pupils in Years 3 to 6.  All week, year groups have been busy producing decorated handwriting and Welsh art, as well as practicing for on-stage competitions in recitation, singing, folk dancing and playing an instrument.  Thank you for helping your children wear their house colours or national costume on 1^st March – it’s always lovely to see the little ones in their Welsh costumes.  Well done to ALL who took part this week, in the preliminary stages and on Eisteddfod Day – we are proud of each and every one of them for their enthusiasm and engagement.  I don’t think even the pupils at Hogwarts are more loyal to their school houses than Lakeside pupils!

Huge Congratulations to Ty Coch (red) for winning at the Year 3 to 6 Eisteddfod!

Thank you also to families for your generosity in buying Marie Curie daffodils this week.  We ran out early in the week and had to quickly get some more!  We don’t know the total raised yet, but will let you know as soon as we get it.

Lakeside Chess Championship

Well done to all the players who took part in the Lakeside Chess Championship on Monday.  We had 41 participants, ably helped by two Cardiff High School pupils.  Many thanks to Prof. Sergey Popov, who runs the club, and to Mrs Johns and Ms Kearle for helping on the day.  The children really enjoyed the event and a number of them are entering the Welsh Chess Championship this month.  Each player received certificates and rewards for taking part.

Safer Internet Day Competition

Much excitement in a whole school assembly this week as the Digital Leaders announced the winners of their Safer Internet Day competitions.  There were MANY entries and it was a difficult job for the Digital Leaders and Mrs Evans to judge them as the standard was so high.  Thanks to all who took part and well done to those who received Highly Commended, 3^rd, 2^nd and 1^st prizes.  The winning posters are on display around the school.

Year 1 Parent Sharing session – Thursday 7^th March

This will take place in the big hall at 9.30am.  Please come to the upper school (KS2) gate after drop-off, and you will be able to enter the hall once all children have arrived in school.  Thank you.

Parent/Carer Consultations booking

The consultations take place on Monday 18^th, Tuesday 19^th and Wednesday 20^th March.  You will receive an email with the link to book appointments and instructions, and the system will open at 6pm on Monday 4^th March.  Thank you.

World Book Day – Friday 8^th March

World Book Day itself falls on Thursday 7^th, but we will celebrate it on Friday 8th by inviting pupils (and staff) to wear comfy clothes for reading.  This could be pyjamas, joggers or whatever your child feels comfortable in, and that will enable them to curl up with a good book.

There will be a Cake Sale next Friday after school.  Year 3 and Year 6 have been asked to provide cakes, but of course all cake donations are gratefully received.  Thank you.

Another wonderfully busy week at Lakeside as we kicked of this half term with Reception enjoying a puppet show to launch their new Learning Project, Puppets & Popups.  Our School Council presented a whole school assembly on Wednesday to celebrate International Mother Language Day and this was followed on Thursday with World Thinking Day, which saw many pupils dressed in Rainbows, Brownies, Beavers and Cubs uniforms for the day.  Year 2 visited Roath Park on Friday and didn’t mind the rain one little bit!

MMR – Urgent!

We have received an urgent communication from the Cardiff & Vale Local Public Health Team about the circulation of measles within communities in the UK.  The team is working on increasing the uptake of the MMR vaccine as this will provide the community protection.

Families whose children have missed vaccines can go to one of the Mass Vaccination Centres without an appointment, 7 days a week, 9.00am to 6.00pm, until 31st March 2024.

If you are not sure if your child is up to date, there are 3 ways of checking:

1) Check your child’s vaccination record book (the ‘Red Book’)

2) Call the UHB Child Health Team on 02921 836926 or 02921 836929

3) Contact your GP practice.

Welsh Week

We are busy preparing for St David’s Day on March 1^st.  All next week pupils will take part in a variety of Welsh-themed activities, including studying and painting in the style of famous Welsh artists, learning Welsh songs, and on Friday, taking part in Eisteddfod competitions, which culminate in the chairing of the bard ceremony.

On March 1^st pupils in Nursery, Reception and Years 1 and 2 are invited to wear national Welsh costume or the colours of Welsh sports teams. 

On March 1^st pupils in Years 3 to 6 are encouraged to wear tops in their house colour - red, blue, yellow or green – as the Y3-6 Eisteddfod is a competition between all the school houses, with an ultimate winner at the end of the day.

Pupils and families can purchase an artificial Marie Curie daffodil for £1, which will be for sale on the school gate from Monday.

Lakeside Chess Championship

We are looking forward to the Lakeside Chess Championship on Monday, February 26^th when many players from Years 2 to 6 have signed up to play four rounds of 15-minute long games.  Good luck to all who are taking part!

Pupils and staff are invited to wear number-themed clothes to school on Friday to mark NSPCC Number Day.  We will be collecting donations on the gate for the charity and enjoying number-themed activities during the day.

PTA News

The first PTA cake sale of 2024 will be taking place at 3.30pm next Friday, 2nd February 2024. Years 2 and 5 will be bringing home paper plates and please can these year groups kindly bring in homemade or shop bought (nut-free) cakes on the day of sale? There will be stalls at both the main school entrance and in the infant playground. All funds raised will go towards painting new sports markings in the playground.

After-school clubs

After-school clubs re-start next week, except for Netball, which starts the following week on the 26^th January because of next Friday’s Inset Day.  We will shortly be starting an additional Chess Club for Years 3 and 4 for Intermediate players.  Letters will be sent out next week about this. 

School Snacks

As part of our Healthy Schools initiative, we are reminding all children that their break time snacks should be a healthy piece of fruit or vegetable, and drinks bottles should only contain water.  Thank you for your co-operation.

School Nursing Service and Child Measurement Programme

The School Nursing Service have asked us to share a letter with you, introducing themselves and their screening visits to school, and with details of a surveillance programme by NHS Wales, measuring the height and weight of all children in Reception classes throughout the country.  There is an additional document and a flyer with more details about the surveillance programme.  All are attached to this Parentmail.

Local Authority Consultation

Attached is a letter from the Local Authority about the expansion of Specialist Resource Bases across Cardiff.  Lakeside is included in the consultation as they are changing the name of our Local Authority Wellbeing Class to a Specialist Resource Base for Emotional Health and Wellbeing.

What a wonderful week it’s been!  I’ve had the great pleasure of enjoying six parent/carer sharing sessions so far, which have been an absolute joy to watch, as I’m sure you agree.  Warm, wonderful, funny, musical and very Christmassy!  Thank you for supplying costumes and props, and for coming to watch your children performing.  There are three more parent/carer sharing sessions to go, plus year group Christmas parties – please see details about next week below.

New Parent Governor

We are delighted to inform you that Mariam Rauf has been elected as a parent-governor and will join the school’s governing body immediately.  We would like to welcome Mariam to the role and look forward to working with her.  Thank you to all who put themselves forward and who voted in the election.

Nasal Flu Vaccine Walk-in clinic – tomorrow (Saturday 16^th December)

The School Nursing Immunisation Team have arranged a Flu walk-in clinic for those children (Reception to Year 11) that missed their flu vaccination at school.  Please see the attached leaflet.

Food Bank Donations

Thank you so much for your donations to the Food Bank at Emmanuel Baptist Church in Gabalfa this week.  Mrs Street and the School Council delivered the donations yesterday and were able to top up the Food Bank’s stores.  There were some lovely Christmas treats among the donations too, which were put in a special Christmas box.  The School Council thoroughly enjoyed their trip, despite the rain, and were helpful, efficient and very well behaved – as always!  Thank you to them, Mrs Street and Lakeside families for their continued generosity.

Circle of Security group information

Cardiff Parenting are offering Circle of Security sessions for families living in Cardiff which is a relationship-based programme for parents of babies and younger children.  Please see the attachment for information.

After-school Clubs

There are no after-school clubs next week. 

Donkey and friends visiting Nursery – Monday 18^th

On Monday, a friendly donkey and his farmyard friends are coming to school to visit the Nursery children.  Morning and afternoon Nursery children will all have an opportunity to say hello to the animals and Farmer Haydn.

Choir visit to Penylan Care Home – Monday 18^th 2pm

The school choir will be visiting Penylan Care Home to share some Christmas songs with the residents there.  Staff will walk the children there and back.  There is no choir after school on Monday 18^th, so please collect your children at 3.30pm.  Thank you.

The children will have a lovely treat on the last day of term when they enjoy a visit from a theatre company who will perform a pantomime for them.  Many thanks to the PTA for financing this for us.

Carols at the Crossroads – Saturday 23^rd December

Please see the attached leaflet for information on a local Christmas fund-raising event, with carols, donkeys, refreshments and more, at Park End Church 4pm to 6pm on Saturday 23^rd December.

A huge thank you to all of you for making our Christmas Fayre such a success last Friday.  There was a wonderful atmosphere, and much excitement and enjoyment.  A fantastic £1500 was raised, thanks to your generosity and the hard work of the PTA and their many helpers on the day.  Almost a third of the amount raised came from Year 6 stalls, so many thanks to their parents/carers for their help with these.

Thanks also to parents/carers of Chess Club members for rearranging their Monday routines a little to accommodate the Chess competition between our pupils and Westbourne Primary pupils.  The children had a great time taking part in the competition, which was very equally matched.  We are hoping to do this again next term.

Yet more thanks are due to parents of choir members, not only for ensuring that your children attend regular rehearsals at school, but for ferrying them to and from Whitchurch High School for rehearsals and taking part in the Cardiff & Vale Music Education Christmas Showcase as part of the Junior and Senior Training Choirs.  Those who attended will know that our choir gave an excellent performance and thoroughly enjoyed themselves.  I also spotted a few pupils who were instrumentalists in the ensembles that played at the Showcase.   I was so impressed by and proud of them, and thanks to their parents for their time and commitment.  None of these events would be possible without parent/carers’ involvement.  A big Well Done and Thank You to everyone involved!

Thank you also to one of our governors/parent for bringing in a rescued young hedgehog called George and talking to the children about him today.  The children (and staff!) were fascinated and wanted to adopt him as a school pet!  

And finally, thank you for sending your children to school in their Christmas jumpers and for donating so generously to our Save the Children collection.  

Food Bank Donations

We are making another collection, as supplies are dwindling at the Food Bank and there is greater demand at Christmas.  If you are able to help by sending a food donation into school with your child, we will be collecting from Monday 11^th until Thursday 14^th, which is when the food will be taken to the Food Bank.  The following is a list of items needed by the Food Bank, though of course any non-perishable food items are always gratefully received.

Parent-governor ballot

Thank you very much for returning your ballot papers for the parent-governor election.  The ballot is now closed.  Once the votes are counted we will let everybody know who the new parent-governor will be.

Much excitement in school today for the 1^st December, which marks the beginning of Advent, and of course for our exciting and fun-filled PTA Christmas Fayre. The weather is perfect for the occasion – cold and crisp!  Thank you all for your generous donations of cakes, toys, chocolate, books and much more.  We look forward to seeing you here later on, and send special thanks to the PTA for organising the event and to all who are helping.

Congratulations to the Lakeside football team.  In their first football match, which was against Llysfaen Primary School, they won 4-2!  The team were given a big cheer in assembly today.  Thank you to Mrs Vanstone and Mr Carey for organising this.

Good luck to all the players in next Monday’s Chess competition and a big thank you to the volunteers who give up their time to run this extremely popular club.

Best wishes to the Lakeside Choir at the CF Music Education Christmas Concert on Tuesday 5th December.  If any families would like to attend the concert, it takes place at Whitchurch High School, Lower site, in the Dutch Barn (take the Power League entrance off Manor Way).  It starts at 6.30pm and is expected to finish before 8.30pm.  No tickets, just a donation at the door.

Morrisons donations

Thanks to Mr Carey’s sister, who works at Morrisons on Newport Road, for arranging donations of items for the Christmas Fayre, including selection boxes, cakes and other treats.  Much appreciated!

PTA Christmas Fayre – Friday, December 1^st

The Christmas season is about to start with a bang on Friday with the PTA Christmas Fayre.  Everyone is getting very excited…  The PTA are still looking for help on the day and we will be welcoming donations from Monday – please deliver to the school office.

We still need donations of:

• Chocolate bars
• Good quality children’s books
• Pre-loved Christmas jumpers
• Good condition teddies and soft toys

On the day of the Fayre, we will need donations of:

• Cakes, sweet desserts and finger foods from Nursery, Year 1 and Year 4 (no nuts, thank you) – or anyone who would like to donate

We still need help to set up and run various stalls please.

Thank you very much for supporting our Odd Socks Day on Monday for Anti-bullying, and Children in Need today.  The whole school enjoyed watching the Pupil Leadership Team’s assembly presentation in which they explored different types of bullying and how children can stand up for and look after each other.  For Children in Need we had some amazing crazy hairstyles and yet again we are grateful for your generous support for this charity.  So far, a wonderful £365.77 has been raised.

Year 4 Parents/Carers: Universal Primary Free School Meals

On Monday (20^th November), Year 4 pupils will start to receive Universal Free School Meals.  Parentpay will be updated on Saturday (18^th) and Year 4 parents/carers can pre-order meals at this time without being asked to make a payment.  Please do not pre-order meals until Saturday.   (Other year groups – please order your meals as usual)

We have a busy week coming up at Lakeside, so I thought I’d just remind you of some of the things that are going on:

Today is the beginning of Anti-bullying Week and pupils and staff are wearing odd socks to mark the week.  The Pupil Leadership Team will present a special assembly all about different types of bullying and how stop it from happening.  The theme this year is ‘Make a Noise About Bullying’, encouraging us to come together to have discussions about what bullying means to us, and share the message that together, we can make a difference and take a stand against bullying.  Our certificates this week will be all about respecting each other, in line with our School Values:

• Respect our Community
• Respect our World

Friday (17^th Nov) is Children in Need and Crazy Hair Day, where we will be collecting donations on the gate and awarding a prize for the best crazy hair.  More singing and dancing on the gate – let’s hope it’s not too windy for the hair styles!

I hope that you all had a pleasant half term break in spite of the weather, let's hope we have some sunshine this weekend!

Thank you to all who have supported our Year 6 pupils who have been selling Remembrance poppies on the gate every morning this week.  The assembly they shared with pupils and their parents was incredible moving and we are all very proud of them. 

Thank you to all who supported the PTA Spooks and Sparkles Discos before half term.  I’m delighted to report that a fantastic £938.46 was raised!  Huge thanks to the PTA and all who helped for their hard work organising and running the event.

Odd Socks Day Monday 13^th November

Next week is Anti-bullying Week and pupils and staff are invited to wear odd socks to school on Monday to raise awareness of anti-bullying.  Pupils need to wear school uniform on Monday (apart from the socks!) and there is no collection on the gate for this.

Children in Need Crazy Hair Day Friday 17^th November

Next Friday is Children in Need day and pupils and staff are invited to come to school in non-uniform, with CRAZY HAIR, or Pudsey items.  We will be collecting donations on the gate on Friday morning to raise funds for Children in Need.

As the weather gets colder please remember to wrap children up warm so that they can enjoy going outside for fresh air, fun and exercise during the school day.

Parents’ Consultations

If you haven’t booked your parent consultation yet, please do so via the link https://Lakesideprimary.schoolcloud.co.uk/.  We are looking forward to welcoming parents/carers into school next week for their consultations with class teachers.  Please note that the booking window closes Sunday evening to allow staff time to prepare for the meetings on Monday.

PTA Spooks and Sparkles Discos Thursday 26th October: 5-5.45pm and 6-7pm  FLYER ATTACHED

Entry to BOTH discos is via the main School Entrance (by the Winnie the Pooh Garden).  Please purchase tickets via ParentPay.  Children will be ticked off from our lists on entry.  Cost of entry: £2.50 each.

Nursery, Reception, Year 1 and Year 2:  5pm – 5.45pm

An adult needs to stay with their child and enjoy the dancing.  Exit will be via the KS2 Door.

Years 3, 4, 5 and 6:  6pm – 7pm

Children can be dropped off, but please make sure they go into the school building.  No mobile phones please.  Pick up will be from the KS2 Door at 7pm.  Children will not be allowed to walk home without a responsible adult picking them up.

Fancy dress is encouraged, not essential. But dancing like nobody’s watching is obviously compulsory!

Yet again I must thank you - our Lakeside families - for your continuing generosity.  On Tuesday staff and pupils wore yellow for Mental Health Day and you donated £379.50 to Bronwen’s Wish.  The charity is funding the building of a wellbeing pod in the school grounds and it is nearing completion.  Lakeside is the first school in Cardiff to receive a pod and the charity hopes to build many more in schools over the coming years.  Thank you again, therefore, for your contribution to this worthy cause.

Shwmae Day Friday 13^th October

Thank you all for joining in Shwmae Day to celebrate all things Welsh.  We had some great costumes on the day and pupils enjoyed some Welsh-themed activities throughout the school.  Look out for Year 6’s rendition of Sosban Fach on the school gate at home time!

PTA Spooks and Sparkles Discos Thursday 26th October: 5-5.45pm and 6-7pm

Entry to BOTH discos is via the main School Entrance (by the Winnie the Pooh Garden).  Please purchase tickets via ParentPay, which has gone live today.  Children will be ticked off from our lists on entry.  Cost of entry: £2.50 each.

Nursery, Reception, Year 1 and Year 2:  5pm – 5.45pm

An adult needs to stay with their child and enjoy the dancing. Exit will be via the KS2 Door.

Years 3, 4, 5 and 6:  6pm – 7pm

Children can be dropped off, but please make sure they go into the school building.  No mobile phones please.  Pick up will be from the KS2 Door at 7pm.  Children will not be allowed to walk home without a responsible adult picking them up.

Fancy dress is encouraged, not essential. But dancing like nobody’s watching is obviously compulsory!

I often thank you – our families – for your generosity whenever we raise money or collect donations, and I mean every word.  Yet again, I must thank you for your incredible kindness.  Last Friday, we collected £343.43 in donations that you made to St John Ambulance.  Then at the end of Friday there was a PTA Cake Sale in aid of the Morocco and Syria DEC appeals, which raised an unprecedented £449.16!  That’s £792.59 raised in one day!  Then, on Wednesday, we held a Harvest assembly and the donations flooded in!  We estimate at least 500 cans of food collected, many kilos of pasta, rice, snacks, plus puddings, toiletries and cleaning items.  The School Council and the food squashed into a mini bus and delivered the donations to Emmanuel Baptist Church Food Bank in Gabalfa.  We couldn’t fit all the food into the storage space at the church and there are now several ‘overflow’ boxes.  The church Food Bank distributes food every Friday and say that they have enough for the next six weeks at least.  The School council are making a video about their ‘trip’ to the Food bank, on which they worked very hard!  So, thank you, thank you, thank you Lakeside families – you always rise to the occasion!  (Thanks also to Mrs Harries, the PTA and Mrs Street for organising these events and collections).

Nasal Flu Vaccinations

These were given to those who consented and were in school yesterday.  If you missed it and wish to have your child vaccinated, you will need to attend a catch up clinic – we will parentmail you when we are informed of any available sessions.  In order to have the vaccination, you will need to use the e-consent form which we parentmailed previously to access a catch up clinic.

Wear Yellow for Mental Health Day Tuesday 10^th October

Tuesday 10^th October pupils and staff are invited to Wear Yellow for Mental Health Day and we will be collecting donations for Bronwen’s Wish, a charity very close to our hearts here at Lakeside and which is financing the Wellbeing Pod being built in the school grounds at the moment.

PTA News

Thank you to all those who attended the PTA meeting we held last week, lovely to see lots of new faces wanting to get involved. Really is worthwhile and very rewarding.

Here are some ways that you can help the PTA:

• Helping to organise events
• Help can take many different forms, e.g. helping set up, helping at the event, clearing up afterwards
• Forming local links with businesses e.g. restaurants, caterers, artists, suppliers, entertainers etc., and/or companies that could sponsor events or make donations
• Helping to be a year group communications link between your year group and the main PTA members. Send us an email if you would like to be included on the PTA WhatsApp as a start.

The children have already prepared their designs and these are now with the printers. PTA news

A PTA meeting took place on Friday morning and many thanks to those who attended.  It was especially nice to welcome new parents/carers to the group.  We can look forward to another fun-packed year of PTA events, which start today with a Cake Sale in aid of the DEC Appeals.  We look forward to seeing you there!

First Aid training for parents – Nursery to Year 2

Thank you to Lisa Williams, paramedic and St John Ambulance trainer, for delivering two Child and Infant First Aid Awareness sessions for parents/carers of pupils in Nursery, Reception, Years 1 and 2.  She also delivered training sessions in both Year 6 classes on ‘DRS ABC’: Danger, Response and ‘Shout!’, then Airway, Breathing and Circulation. They also practised putting someone into the recovery position and how to do CPR and use a defibrillator.  Thank you to Lisa and St John Ambulance for making this possible.

The first trip of the school year took place this week with Year 5 visiting Llancaiach Fawr to launch their Tudor history learning project.  The children had a wonderful time learning about Tudor life.

A huge thank you to the PTA for paying for a shade shed in the lower playground.  This is now up and the children are enjoying their new ‘house’.  Look out for the autumn term programme of fun and fundraising from the PTA which will be shared with you shortly.

We wish all families who are celebrating Rosh Hashanah this weekend a pleasant and enjoyable celebration. May your new year be filled with good health, happiness and sweet moments.

After-school Clubs

Most after school clubs start next week - w/c 18^th September. 

We’ve had a very kind offer from a group of parents to run a school netball team, which we are very excited about.  More details to follow shortly.  We are also hoping to extend our Chess Club to include higher level players as well as beginners.  More details about this will also follow shortly.

Child & Infant First Aid Awareness sessions for parents/carers of Nursery, Reception, Year 1 & Year 2 pupils

St John Ambulance Cymru will be running Child and Infant First Aid Awareness sessions for parents/carers on Thursday 28^th September.  There will be two sessions, one in the morning (9.15 to 10.45) and one in the afternoon (1.30 to 2.45).  Information regarding how to take part in these sessions will be sent to parents/carers of the above year groups separately. 

Non-uniform day Friday 29^th September

As part of our work with St John Ambulance service pupils are invited to wear their own clothes for this non-uniform day in order to raise funds.  Donations will be collected on the gate in the morning.

RAAC

I am sure that you are all familiar with news reports about RAAC in school buildings.  We have been informed by the local authority that, fortunately, we have no RAAC at Lakeside.  Please also see the attached letter from Cardiff Council regarding this.

PE Lessons

Please can pupils wear their PE kit to school on their PE lesson day, as detailed below.  Thank you.

School Meals

It’s really important that you book your child’s meal in advance (by 8am each morning) so that the kitchen can prepare the correct number of meals for children.  This applies to ALL school meals, including Universal Free School Meals.  The Parentpay booking system means that the Kitchen will only have enough food for the orders booked, so if you do not book your child’s meal, it is unlikely that there will be a meal available for them at lunchtime.  If this happens, the school has been advised to contact parents/carers and ask them to bring in a packed lunch for their child to eat.

Please see below two video links.  These will show you how to book and/or cancel your child’s school dinner.  It is very important that you cancel your child’s meal if, for example, they decide to bring a packed lunch to school or if they are absent.  Meals are prepared based on the orders booked via Parentpay, so if a child does not eat the meal, the food goes to waste.

Some parents/carers have found that the second video – how to cancel – is not very clear.  To cancel, you will need to go to the Parentpay Home page, select the child whose meal you wish to cancel and navigate to find the meal highlighted in green (this process is the same as the booking process this far!)  Then, you click on the meal you wish to cancel.  The green highlight will disappear and the date will go grey.  This is the only way to know that you have cancelled.   You can check that the date is no longer highlighted by going back to homepage and navigating again from there to the meal choices.

Sickness and Diarrhoea

If your child has vomited or had diarrhoea, NHS guidelines are that they need to be clear for a full 48 hours before returning to school. Please do not send your child back to school before this point to avoid spreading the illness. Thank you

After-school Clubs

After school clubs will start week beginning 18^th September.  Please see the attached for details.  There will be a Dancefit taster session during the school day on Monday 11^th September for Years 3 to 6.  If your child would like to join this session, please send a note in for their teacher, giving them permission to attend. The session will be at 2pm.

In addition to the clubs listed in the attached document, Chess Club will also be restarting from Monday 18^th September, for Year 2 pupils.  A letter will be sent home to Year 2 parents/carers next week, with further details and information.

Warm weather

It is typical that the hot weather has return as the children are returning to school! Please remember to put sunscreen on your children and send them in with hats and refillable water bottles to ensure they keep cool and get plenty to drink.

School Drop-off

Reception and Nursery pupils’ parents/carers will be notified of separate arrangements for drop-off and pick-up as they start school, but for all other year groups, the arrangements will be the same as last year:

The school gates open @ 8.45am

Year 1 parents/carers to walk their children round to the FP Playground;

Year 2 parents/carers to drop their children at the path to 2P;

Years 3 to 6: parents drop pupils at school gates to make their own way to their classes between 8.45 and 8.55am.

Late arrival at school

The school gates and doors are open between 8.45 and 8.55am.  Excluding Nursery, any pupils who arrive at school after 8.55am must go to the office in order to enter the school and be signed in, as class teachers will be busy taking registers and introducing lessons after 8.55am.  Thank you.

School Pick-up

Nursery and Reception parents/carers will be given separate information on collecting their children as they start school.

Year 1 pupils are handed over via the Year 1 decking at 3.25pm

Year 2 pupils will be brought to the Foundation Phase playground steps at 3.25pm

Years 3, 4, 5 & 6 pupils can be collected from outside the main gates at 3.30pm

No PE sessions this week

Please note that there will be no PE sessions this week.  Class teachers will let children know which day of the week they will have PE.  Pupils can continue to come to school wearing their PE kit on the appropriate day.  School PE kit is available from YC Sports, alternatively children can wear navy/white T-shirts and navy shorts/leggings/jogging bottoms.  Children MUST wear white or dark coloured trainers on PE days please.  Please don’t send your children to school in expensive / designer sports kits or trainers.  If your child wears stud earrings, please cover them with a plaster or micropore tape before school on PE days, or take them out if possible. Thank you.

Snack

Children may bring snack into school each day. Please remember it needs to be healthy fruit or vegetables – thank you. Please note, we are a NUT FREE school (this includes products that contain nuts eg Nutella) - please abide by this at all times. Thank you.

After-school clubs

All after-school clubs will begin the week commencing Monday 18^th September.  More information will follow soon.

Dear Parents/Carers,

Thank you to all of you who came to the wonderful PTA Summer Fayre last Friday.  There was a wonderful atmosphere and the weather was perfect.  I’m delighted to be able to share that the Fayre raised a phenomenal £2088!!!  Thank you to all who helped, and in particular the PTA, for all their hard work.  What an excellent result! 

We’ve had a wonderful week, starting with Transition Day on Monday which was followed by the Foundation Orchestra in Concert in the evening, which featured some of Lakeside’s talented instrumentalists.  Reception held Play & Stay sessions and the Year 6 Leavers’ Party took place on Thursday evening.  As I write, Year 5 are still on their trip to Oakwood Park – all reports are that they are having a good time in spite of the rain.

Children are bringing reports home this week.  We are immensely proud of everybody’s progress and achievements this year.  Well done to all of our children!

Universal Free School Meals

From September, Year 3 children will receive Universal Free School Meals, as well as Years 2, 1 and Reception.  From 20^th November, Year 4 children will also start to receive free school meals under the scheme.  Please remember that you still need to order your child’s meals on ParentPay.  Thank you.

Remaining Lost property

We have a huge number of lost property items with no names on them.  They will be on display outside the main gates next Thursday, 20^th July (weather permitting!).  If you are missing anything please come and take a look.  Any remaining lost property at the end of next week will be donated either to the PTA or charity.  Thank you.

Lakeside’s Got Talent – Thursday 20^th July

Thursday morning will see the welcome return of Lakeside’s Got Talent in which children who have gone through heats in their year groups perform on stage in the final.  This is a fun competition for those who compete and especially for those who watch, and we’re all looking forward to it.

£5 Cinema Tickets

We received an email from the Odeon Cinema, Cardiff Bay, asking us to let you know that all standard tickets for all films are now just £5 if booked online (this includes the booking fee).  Tickets purchased in the cinema are £6.50.  The flyer is attached.

Years 3 to 6 Sports Day

Children enjoyed an exciting Sports Day this week.  Thank you as always to the National Indoor Athletic Centre for allowing us to use their outstanding facilities.  Our Lakeside athletes had a really great time.

We are looking forward to our final Sports Day of this year as Nursery children take part in their own competitions next Friday morning and afternoon.

Transition Day: Monday 10^th July

Pupils moving to Cardiff High School in September will spend a second Transition Day there on Monday.  This will also be Lakeside’s Transition Day.  Pupils in Reception to Year 5 should come into school as normal and go to their current classes to take the register.  They will then be taken to spend time in their new year groups, looking at the classrooms, dining hall, playgrounds, toilets, etc.

Bronwen’s Wish Charity

Some of you may have noticed that there is preparation work being carried out in our Forest Schools area.  This is the beginning of work on our Wellbeing Pod, developed by the Bronwen’s Wish Charity.  We are looking forward to the progress and completion of this exciting project, and will keep you updated.

Years 3 to 6 Sports Day

The Cardiff Road Safety Team have cycling courses coming up over the summer break and have asked us to share the following information with you:  

Cycle Training - level 2 On the road

This course is for children aged 9 and above.

This course is the National Standard level 1 and 2 course.

This course is for children who cannot ride, balance or peddle, aged 4-10.

Well done!

• Year 4 and Year 6 tennis teams made Lakeside proud with their performances in the tennis tournament finals this week at Cardiff Met.  Year 4 played all the best teams in south Wales for their age group, and Year 6 played the best team in all of Wales.  Both teams narrowly missed out on semi-final places.  Well done to all players!
• Three of our Year 6 boys have been selected to play cricket for south east Wales – huge congratulations to them!

Thank you to all parents and carers of children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 for bringing your children to NIAC for this week’s Sports Day.  Thank you also to those of you who were able to stay and watch the fun.  There was a great turnout – over 200 parents/carers/ families cheered for the children, who clearly had a wonderful time taking part in all the sporting activities – we think they may all be a bit tired this weekend!  

Thank you for supporting the PTA Preloved Uniform Sale last week.   The PTA raised £137 which represents a significant amount of recycled uniform.   A lot of navy school uniform items have now been donated to a Cardiff charity that helps other schools.  

Cycling Safety

5V will begin their Cycling Proficiency training next week.  May we please remind everyone that all pupils who cycle to/from school need to wear a helmet at all times when cycling.  Thank you.

Cycling Safety

5T have been taking part in their Cycling Proficiency training this week and have done very well.  Just a reminder that all pupils who cycle to/from school need to wear a helmet at all times when cycling, even in the hot weather. Thank you.

School Dinners on Sports Day

The Reception to Year 2 Sports Day is next Friday, 23^rd June.  When ordering lunch for that day PLEASE can parents/carers choose the Grab Bag option only.  This is because the timings of Sports Day do not allow for a staggered lunch time, so all the children will be eating together.  Thank you.

Well done!

• Some of our cricketers took part in a cricket festival at St Fagan’s Cricket Club and won all four of their matches, with some outstanding play in all aspects of the game by pupils.  Well done Lakeside cricketers!
• The Pupil Leadership Team judged the Three Before Me competition this week and awarded 1^st, 2^nd and 3^rd prizes to the winner and runners-up. 
• Year 5 pupils who attended Mrs Harries’s Young Lifesavers sessions received their certificates for completing the course.  Well done to all.
• Good luck to the Lakeside Football players in tomorrow’s Lions Tournament!

Welcome back for the final half term of the 22-23 academic year.  The weather is lovely and it’s a pleasure to see the children enjoying the fields and outdoor areas of the school.  As always, lots to look forward to in the next few weeks, including Sports Days, the PTA Summer Fayre and Year 6 Leavers’ activities.  Thank you to the PTA for organising the Children’s Book Sale after school today. 

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT RE. CLASS PHOTOS: MONDAY 12^th June

When Colorfoto came in last month to take class photos, one of the camera rolls was corrupted.  This means that some of the photos need to be taken again.  Please can parents/carers ensure that all children wear school uniform (summer uniform is fine!) on Monday in case the photos they were in need to be retaken.  Many thanks.

Sun Safety / Uniform

With the lovely warm weather that we have been having, it is important that children have sunhats and wear sunscreen to school. This should protect them for the day, but they can bring in sun cream to reapply themselves. It is also important that they wear suitable footwear that allows them to run around safely.  This includes black shoes/ trainers, white or navy-blue sandals, white trainers (summer term only) with white socks. Please do not send your child to school in brightly coloured footwear.

PRIME DRINKS

Some of you may be aware of reports in the national press about a Newport primary school pupil who had to have his stomach pumped following a “cardiac episode after drinking Prime Energy drink”.  Prime Energy drinks and Prime Hydration drinks come in various flavours and are extremely popular.  The company producing these drinks advise on their website that Prime Energy drinks are only suitable for over-18s.  Prime Hydration drinks do not carry such a warning.  Prime Energy drinks come in cans and Hydration drinks come in plastic bottles.

We therefore recommend that parents/carers do not give Prime Energy drinks to their children, and we request that children do not bring these drinks into school.  The Prime Hydration drinks are acceptable. Thank you.

Sports news

Some of our tennis players took part in the Green Balls tennis tournaments at Cardiff Met this week.  The Lakeside Year 6 A Team and the Year 3 & 4 A Team went through to the South Wales final.  Well done to all players in the Lakeside teams for playing so well – we’re very proud of you!

Bug Club Online Reading Platform

We now have access to a new resource on Bug Club called Reading Corner, to help promote reading for enjoyment.  This is available to all children, next to their My Library area. Children can choose books from a variety of topics and up to Year 2, the books have a ‘read to me’ option.

Korfball – Wales team

Mrs Evans (Year 1 teacher) will be representing Wales in the Tri-nations Korfball Tournament on Saturday 17^th and Sunday 18^th June.  If you’d like to come along and support our teacher and the rest of the Welsh Korfball team, the matches take place in Cardiff City House of Sport (Cardiff City Stadium, Clos Parc Morgannwg, Cardiff CF11 8AW).  Entry to this event is free!  Please bring your Welsh flags, banners, scarves and any other supporter paraphernalia are highly encouraged!

Criw Cymraeg video

This week members of the Criw Cymraeg pupil group gave a presentation in assembly, telling the rest of the school what Criw have been doing throughout the year, which included organising activities for Shwmae Day and Welsh Week.  They have produced a video all about the Welsh alphabet, which was shared with the school in the assembly.

Lost Property

Thank you for joining in our World Bee Day celebration.  The school was a ‘hive’ of colourful activity and there was a real ‘buzz’ throughout the day!  Thank you as well to some of our governors who joined in with the fun and did some bee-friendly planting in the Half Acre Wood garden.

Class Photo Day: Monday

Colorfoto will take photos of your child’s class on Monday.  They will also be taking photos of pupil groups.  Please could pupil group members and prefects wear their badges, if possible?  Thank you.

Health & Safety: lower gate closure

Thank you for your patience while the lower gate is out of action.  This is due to the nesting birds who have chosen to nest inside the gate post.

Next Wednesday - School Council fundraiser for Guide Dogs

On Wednesday 24^th May the School Council is organising activities to raise money to donate to the charity Guide Dogs for the Blind.  There will be a collection bucket on the gate on the morning of Wednesday 24^th May, then later in the day all pupils will have an opportunity to take part in short competitions (e.g. name the toy dog, guess the number of sweets) with the chance of winning a prize.  We look forward to raising money for this very worthy charity.

Year 5 Cycling Proficiency

Mrs Tanner’s class – 5T – will undertake Cycling Proficiency training during the week beginning Monday 12^th June.  Mrs Vanstone’s class – 5V – will do so during the week beginning Monday 26^th June.  Specific information will be sent out to Year 5 parents next week.  Please will parents/carers check that the children’s bikes are in good working order and that they have helmets.  If your child does not have access to a bike, please let us know.   Thank you.

PTA News

• Thank you everyone for all the lovely plants and seedlings donated last Friday. We raised a super £163.85 and hope everyone is now enjoying planting up their purchases and watching them flourish. A special thank you to Waitrose, Asda and the lovely Lisa from the Dutch Garden centre for their last-minute donations to help boost our stock.
• PTA are holding a catch up and join in meeting straight after drop-off on Friday 26th, in school. Please come along to support us, especially Foundation Phase parents - we need newcomers as the older years start to move on. 
• New event - Children’s Book & Bird Seed Sale (I know!) on Friday 9th June. This is the first Friday back after the half term so if you have time to have a clear out, we will be delighted to receive good condition children’s books all that week in prep for the Friday sale. Thank you!
• Date for your diary - Summer Fayre 7th July. If you enjoyed the last one, why not help out for a spell on a stall at this one? Every little honestly does help.

Thank you to everyone who was involved in last Friday’s PTA Cake Sale, especially to Year 6 and Reception families, who provided the cakes.  Thank you also to all of you who supported the sale.  It’s always very popular and the PTA are delighted to share that they raised a wonderful £394!  Thank you PTA, all helpers and Lakeside families!

Next Friday – 19^th May – World Bee Day

We will be enjoying some Outdoor Learning activities next Friday, 19^th May, to mark World Bee Day.  This will be a non-uniform day and pupils and staff are invited to come to school dressed in bee or bright colours, or anything bee-related.

PTA Seedling Sale – Friday (12^th)

We received some wonderful donations for the PTA Seedling Sale and the stall was very popular at the end of the school day.  Thank you to all who grew and donated plants, and to all who came and bought something.  Thanks – as always – to our wonderful PTA for organising this.

Preparing for summer

Now that the weather is warming up please remember to protect children with sun cream, sun hats, etc., and make sure that they bring their water bottles each day.  There are a number of water stations throughout the school for children to refill their bottles.  Thank you.

Health & Safety on the FP Playground

To ensure the safety of our children, please can we kindly remind parents/carers not to allow them to use the FP playground equipment before/after school or Nursery. 

Pupil Leadership Team Competition

The Head Boy, Head Girl and Deputies launched a competition for pupils from Reception to Year 6 today.  It is to design a poster to encourage children to use Three Before Me.  Your children know all about Three Before Me – it’s what pupils are asked to do when they need help: before asking the teacher, stop and think, ask a friend, or look in a book/on the internet.  These are characteristics of two of our Lakeside Learners, Resourceful Reg and Independent Indie. 

The poster needs to be eye-catching, easy to read and clear.  Three Before Me must be spelled out like this (no abbreviations).  The winning poster will be used throughout the school.

Entries can be done individually, in pairs or in threes.  No more than three in a group please.  They can be digital or on paper.  Paper posters can be placed in the competition box (KS2) or given to the class teacher (FP).  Digital entries can be emailed to PLT@lakesideprm.cardiff.sch.uk.  Thank you.

Year 4 Code Club: Tuesdays from 5^th June 3.30-4.15pm

Parents/carers of Year 4 will soon receive a form to sign their child up to Code Club which will be run by Mrs Vanstone (Year 5 teacher).  Code Club teaches children to use computers to create games, animations and websites.  If your year 4 child wishes to join Code Club, please complete and return the forms by Friday, 19^th May.  Thank you.

SUMMER BREAK

Thank you to all who joined in our coronation celebrations – wearing red, white and blue and dancing on the gate.  Remember to stop by later to buy a cake from the PTA (FP Hall).  We had a great day marking the King’s coronation and wish everyone a pleasant Bank Holiday weekend.

New markings have been laid on the Foundation Phase playground this week and we would like to thank the PTA for funding these and Lakeside families for supporting the PTA!   

Coronation at the Crossroads: Monday 8^th May, Park End Church, 10am to 2pm

Park End Church on Rhydypennau crossroads is holding a family celebration/activity day on Monday 8^th May 10am to 2pm.  The event is free and open to everyone.  There will be activities and crafts for children, a bouncy castle, a BBQ, a football competition and an ice cream van.  Some local charities will also be represented and all proceeds will go to charity.

PTA Seedling Sale – Friday May 12^th at pick-up time

Don’t forget the PTA Seedling Sale next Friday (12^th May).  Please drop seedling donations off on the morning of the 12^th – they can be left by the PTA storage container.  The sale will start around pick-up time.  Thank you.

Arrival at Nursery

In order to protect the health and safety of children in the playground before the start of Nursery, the shutters onto the Nursery playground will be closed at the beginning of the morning and afternoon sessions.  Please could parents/carers queue with your child along the Nursery path until Nursery opens at 9am or 12.45pm.  Thank you.

Nursery appeal for items

Nursery has received a lot of donations – thank you so much!  So far they have plenty of toy buggies, tools and food, but would still love to receive the following if anyone has some they’d like to donate:  baby dolls, toy pots/pans and cooking utensils, things for the construction house e.g. adult size paint brushes, rollers, safety goggles, toy lawn mowers and leaf blowers.  They also need golf tees, wooden stacking toys, number/mathematical jigsaws & puzzles, mathematical books suitable for nursery (number/shape etc), dice – large and small, kaleidoscopes, toy microscopes, Playdough accessories, toy diggers/JCBs, toy cars, small world play – fairies, police, pirates (but not pirate boats), age 5/6 or 6/7 joggers and leggings, comics for Nursery-age children and a couple of new items – unicorns and mermaids!  Thank you so much.

SUMMER BREAK

We had a wonderful day on Monday when the Mayor visited school at the invitation of the School Council, and delivered an assembly on his chosen charity, Guide Dogs for the Blind.  To everyone’s delight, there were two beautiful guide dogs in attendance, who behaved impeccably obviously.  This week our Pupil Voice board asked the children what they have learned this week, and many of them wrote ‘Guide Dogs’, including how to tell if a dog is ‘working’ and therefore not to be touched (they wear yellow and white harness), and whether the owner is not only blind but also has hearing problems (they wear a red harness).  Many thanks to the School Council and Miss Taylor and Miss Page for organising this.  The School Council will be organising fundraising activities for Guide Dogs for the Blind.  Information to follow shortly.

Please remember that this coming Monday (and the following one) is a Bank Holiday, so school will be closed.

Coronation celebrations Friday 5^th May with PTA Cake Sale: Year 6 and Reception to provide cakes please

Pupils and staff are invited to wear red, white and/or blue to school.  We will be having tea parties on the field, weather permitting, and Coronation-related activities during the day.  The PTA are hosting a Cake Sale and families are invited to enjoy their cakes picnic-style on the field - bring a picnic rug and a few other nibbles and enjoy a community afternoon before breaking up for the Coronation weekend, again weather permitting.  Please can Year 6 and Reception provide the cakes for this sale.  Thank you.

The PTA are fundraising for some new playground markings in the Foundation Phase playground and more outdoor play equipment for KS2: basketball hoops, football net goals etc.  They are working towards some bigger ideas too, soon to be shared. 

Coronation school dinner

The kitchen is preparing a special Coronation menu for school dinners for Friday 5^th May.  If your child would like to receive this, please can parents/carers order it in the usual way, but by Monday evening?  This will allow the kitchen time to order in supplies.  Thank you.

PTA Seedling Sale – Friday May 12^th at pick-up time

We are looking forward to our second Seedling Sale - hope lots of you have potted up and are nursing your little growers along.  Seedling donations can be dropped the morning of the 12^th then join us at pick-up time for the Sale.  Anything not sold to families is either snapped up by the staff or gets planted in the 100 Acre Wood garden – nothing is wasted.  Last year the school grew a few pumpkins that were donated as seedlings and they were displayed at Harvest Festival and the Halloween Disco.  How cool!  All proceeds go toward funding more fun for your children.  Best wishes, Lakeside PTA

Trips

There were two trips from school this week.  Year 1 visited Mountain View Ranch in Caerphilly as part of their Enchanted Woodland learning project, and Year 2 visited Newport Wetlands for their Our Natural World project.  Both trips also fitted beautifully with that fact that this week was Wales Outdoor Learning Week, celebrating how we can all benefit from learning in, learning about and learning for our natural environment. 

Parent questionnaire

Thank you to everyone who took the time to complete the parent questionnaire at the end of last term.  Main themes indicate that children enjoy their learning projects across the school, the Parent/Carer sharing sessions were popular and appreciated, and that children are enjoying their Outdoor Learning.

The area around the school

Please may we remind parents/carers to be mindful of the school’s neighbours and their property and to ensure that children are supervised once they have been handed over by teachers.  We would also like to remind families that although there are strict restrictions on traffic driving past school at certain times of day, these do NOT apply to local residents.  This means that, though they are quiet, there is no guarantee that vehicles will not drive past the main entrance.  In the interests of safety, therefore, the road should be treated as any road would be and walking should be done on the pavements.  This will also encourage good road safety habits in our pupils.  Thank you.

Thank you so much for the donations that Nursery has already received following last week’s appeal – they are much appreciated by the staff and the children.  Below is the list again, in case you missed it and fancy having a sort-out.  All donations gratefully received.  Thank you.  We need:
