Dear Parents/Carers,
It’s hard to believe that next week is the last week of this half term, and, although it has been short, it’s been a busy one. I’m sure we’re all hoping for an improvement in the weather for the final half term of the academic year so that we can enjoy the outdoors, especially the Hundred Acre Wood garden at the front of the school, which will soon be finished and ready for use.
Class Photos: Monday 23rd May
Colorfoto will be visiting school to take class photos on Monday. Please see below for arrangements for Year 2.
Year 2 Class Photos: Friday 27th May
Year 2 will be on a trip on Monday, so Colorfoto are visiting on Friday to take photos of Year 2. As this is Red, White & Blue Day, if you would like your child to be in school uniform for the photos please send them to school wearing uniform and they can change into their red, white & blue costume afterwards. Alternatively, they can be ‘in costume’ for the photo.
Jubilee Red, White and Blue Day – Friday 27th May
On this day, we are inviting pupils and staff to wear red, white or blue (or all three) to school in order to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. There will be fun activities throughout the day to mark the occasion.
One-way system (Foundation Phase)
We would like to continue using the one-way system for drop-off and pick-up because it has proved successful in easing congestion and providing more space for pushchairs. Thank you.
PTA News
Seedling sale spectacular!
What a fabulous inaugural Lakeside Seedling (and Ice Pops!) Sale we had last Friday. Whilst very windy, we were thrilled with the many many numbers of you both donating and buying. (Bravo to the grandparents too!) Thank you very much all. Over £170 was raised in that breezy hour. We sold nearly everything, after a flutter of purchases from the teachers, and with the infant garden project underway it was perfect timing to hand over the balance of stock for the newly built raised beds. No pressure teachers and staff, we will all be watching how they do in the new garden!!
Jubilee trail
To celebrate the Queen’s Jubilee we are inviting families to set up anything with a royal connection in their garden - think kings and queens, British tea party, rule Britannia. Go for it! If you’d like to take part, please message lakesideprimarycardiffpta@gmail.com and be ready to display from Sunday 29th May to Wednesday 8th June when the kids go back to school. Currently we need a few more entries for this event to go ahead - you feeling it? If so please email us by Monday 23rd to give us time to set up and share the trail.
After-school Clubs next half term
All After-school Clubs will continue after the break but due to the bank holiday and Inset Day all clubs will start the second week back, so the week commencing Monday 13th June, 2022.

Monday 5th and Tuesday 6th September are INSET DAYS
Pupils return to school on Wednesday 7th September
Dear Parents/Carers,
At 8.30am this morning many of our Year 6 pupils boarded a coach bound for Morfa Bay. This is the first residential visit since before the pandemic. The children were very excited and looking forward to their weekend away and there was a lovely atmosphere of celebration as they were waved off by their parents and carers. We wish them a wonderful, fun-filled weekend.
New parent-governor
I’m delighted to welcome Dr Claudia Bennett onto the board of governors as our new parent-governor. Dr Bennett has children in Reception and Year 2. We look forward to seeing her at governor meetings going forward.
Cakes and treats brought in to school for sharing
Unfortunately, we are unable to accommodate birthday/celebration cakes, sweets, chocolates and other treats that children bring into school to share with classmates. This is due to problems with allergies and intolerances among children and staff. Thank you for your co-operation.
May 16th-20th – Walk to School Week
Living Streets is a charity whose mission statement is to achieve a better walking environment and inspire people to walk more. Next week, school pupils all over the country are challenged to walk to school every day, even if this means parents/carers driving them to school, parking just a bit further away than normal and walking the rest of the way (Park & Stride): better for health; better for the environment. At Lakeside we already follow the Walk Once a Week (WOW) scheme and next week we are making an even bigger effort to walk or Park & Stride to school every day.
Trips & Visits
On Wednesday this week, Year 3 were scheduled to visit Porthkerry Park. You may remember the weather on Wednesday – it was very wet! So, a quick reorganisation took place and the year group enjoyed a great visit to the National Museum in Cardiff instead. Thank you to the Museum for accommodating us at short notice.
PTA Jubilee trail
The PTA is inviting families to set up anything with a royal connection in their garden: queens, kings, tea parties, Buckingham Palace... for display from Sunday 29th to Wednesday 8th June. To take part, please message lakesideprimarycardiffpta@gmail.com by 18th May. Thank you.

Pupils return to school on Wednesday 7th September
Dear Parents/Carers,
All around us there are signs that summer is approaching. The trees are finally turning green, the weather is gradually warming up and children are coming to school in summer uniform. After the past two years, it’s heart-warming to be able to enjoy these simple, normal pleasures.
Mental Health Awareness Week Monday 9th to Sunday 15th May
This year MIND’s theme for Mental Health Awareness Week is loneliness. A story video (Be Kind by Pat Zietlow Miller), read by Year 1 teacher Miss Crompton, will be on the website from Monday for families to share.
Trips & Visits
Last week, Reception pupils visited Barry Island as part of their Who Lives Under a Rock Pool? Context. This week Year 3 were visited by some wonderful Birds of Prey and they are going on a visit to Porthkerry Park next week. Next Friday will see Year 6 heading off on the first residential trip from school for over two years, when they visit Morfa Bay for the weekend.
News from the PTA
Jubilee trail
Throughout lockdown we established ourselves as a trailblazer in trails. Having had a break from this for a while, we felt a Jubilee Trail would be a fun community and inclusive way to celebrate the Jubilee. So, we are inviting families to set up anything with a royal connection in their garden - think kings and queens, British tea party, rule Britannia. Go for it!
If you’d like to take part, please message lakesideprimarycardiffpta@gmail.com and be ready to display from Sunday 29th May (giving you a Fri/Sat to get set up) to Wednesday 8th June when the kids go back to school. Please email us by 18th May to give us time to set up and share the trail.
Seedling Sale
How’s the growing going? Forecast is looking good so far, so all set for Friday May 13th for the sale - drop in the morning, and buy in the afternoon at pick up. Bring all your friends and family to buy some plants!
We’re delighted to share that we have been in touch with the V21 garden nursery at the Heath. They employ people with all sorts of challenges and disabilities and would be thrilled to take anything we don’t sell, as a donation, so nothing will go to waste. Find out more and treat yourself to a little something here https://www.v21.org.uk/v21-enterprises/v21-garden-nursery-heath/ (their hanging baskets are award winning!)
