Dear Parents/Carers,
Thank you all for joining in with Red Nose Day and for your generous donations to Comic Relief. We have raised £272.29 on the gate and online so far. The school was a sea of red today – a welcome brightness in this dull weather! Special thanks to Year 5 pupils, families and staff for the huge and wonderful charity stall to raise money for Comic Relief. ‘Stall’ is too small a word – there were about 10 stalls, selling cakes, cookies, drinks, sweets, friendship bracelets, henna and much more. We don’t yet know how much the stalls raised but will share this with you as soon as we can. Thank you again for supporting this fundraiser.
Ramadan
Ramadan will be starting next week. If your child is going to be fasting (or partial fasting) and/or praying please send a letter in with your child to give to the class teacher. It’s important that we know children have your permission for this. Thank you, and we wish you all the blessings of the holy month.

You will shortly be sent a link to sign up for face-to-face parents’/carers’ consultations in school. We look forward to sharing your child’s progress with you, and you will have the opportunity to look at some of their work.

Dear Parents/Carers,
Thank you so much for joining in with Welsh Week. It was a delight to see so many children dressed in traditional Welsh costume on Wednesday and in house colours on Friday. I loved seeing the videos, photos and recipes that families made during the Half Term break – there were some delicious-looking cakes, biscuits and even cawl (soup) – well done Lakeside bakers! Thank you also for your generous donations to the Marie Curie Daffodil Appeal. We will share the total once the money has been counted by Marie Curie.
We had two excellent Eisteddfodau this week. The Reception to Year 2 Eisteddfod took place on Wednesday and the Years 3 to 6 had their Eisteddfod today. The hall was awash with the pupils’ house colours and there was singing, reciting, dancing and playing musical instruments.
Best wishes to all who are celebrating the Hindu festival of Holi on Wednesday. We hope you have a very pleasant festival of colour.

Dear Parents/Carers,
A quick reminder of today’s PTA Cake Sale to raise money for the Turkey/Syria earthquake appeal.
As most of you probably know by now - there will be no Teachers’ Strike on Tuesday 14th. School will be open as usual to all pupils and staff.
Safer Internet Day – Tuesday, 7th Feb
The Digital Leaders competition results were NOT announced in assembly today because there were so many amazing entries, we need more time to go through and judge them! The results will be announced next Friday. Thank you for helping and encouraging your children to take part in these competitions about this very important subject.
International Day of Women and Girls in Science: Saturday 11th February
Saturday 11th February is only the second International Day of Women and Girls in Science. Our very own scientist, Mrs Gamble, introduced a video about a friend of hers (Professor Haley Gomez) who is a Professor of Astrophysics at Cardiff University. She is studying Dark Matter, using infra-red cameras and telescopes. Mrs Gamble had an infra-red camera and shared images of our assembly, showing how heat and cold have different colours, which delighted the children. If you, or someone you know, are involved in science and would like to come and share your experience with us during British Science Week, which is between 10th and 19th March, we would love to welcome you. This could be in the form of an assembly, a talk with a group of children or a scientific demonstration (or all the above!). Please contact me on MitchellR28@hwbcymru.net. Thank you.
St David’s Day and Eisteddfod
Big School Birdwatch
Lakeside pupils submitted the results of their Birdwatch with the RSPB, so we thought we’d share them with you: pupils counted 50 blackbirds, 9 herring gulls, 210 house sparrows, 363 magpies, 41 robins and 103 doves/pigeons. Thank you to the pupils and Mrs Thomas for carrying out this study.
Books from home for World Book Day – Thursday 2nd March
Thank you to those of you who have already donated books for our reading corners. There’s room for plenty more fiction and non-fiction books for children, as well as comics and magazines. Thank you.
