    Fri 27 Jan 2023

    Dear Parent/Carer,

It was lovely to hear this week how much Year 3 enjoyed their visit to the National Museum in Cardiff.  I was delighted to learn how well-behaved, polite and engaged the children were during this visit, reported by staff at the museum and also members of the public who happened to be there at the same time.  Well done Year 3!

    Industrial Action/Strike, Wednesday 1st February

Here’s a reminder of arrangements for next Wednesday’s planned day of industrial action.

The classes that will be open on Wednesday 1st February are:

    Nursery AM and PM

    2P (Miss Page’s class, Year 2)

    5T (Mrs Tanner’s class, Year 5)

    5V (Mrs Vanstone’s class, Year 5)

All other classes will be closed to pupils

We have been informed by County that pupils eligible for free school meals (not Universal Free School Meals in Reception) will be provided with a voucher for use on strike day – Wednesday 1st February.

We will be in touch with a similar arrangement for the 14th February in due course.  I can confirm, however, that the Year 5 and 6 residential trip will go ahead, and the Year 5 and 6 classes will be open to pupils back at school on that day.

    Lost Property

Please see attached the latest flyer of lost property.  If you recognise any, please let Mrs Ullah know and it will be returned to you.

NSPCC Number Day – Thursday 2nd February

Pupils and staff are invited to come to school wearing something with numbers on it.  Children will enjoy number-based activities during the day, and we will be collecting donations on the gate that morning for the NSPCC.  Thank you.

INSET DAY – Friday 3rd February

A reminder that Friday 3rd is an Inset Day and school will be closed to pupils.

Digital Leaders competitions and Safer Internet Day – Tuesday 7th February

Children are invited to enter a poetry competition linked to this year’s Safer Internet Day theme, which is "My Life Online".  A second competition is to create an animation about experiences online, and work for this competition will take place in school.  There is a charge of 50p for each competition entry.

Entries must be in by Safer Internet Day – Tuesday 7th February and winners will be announced the following week.

Wishing you all a good weekend.

    Best wishes,

    Rachel Mitchell, Headteacher

    Dear Parent/Carer,

    Water Leak

I would like to thank all parents, carers and families affected for your patience during the time of the water leak in the school car park.  I’m aware that having to close Dragonflies was disruptive and I’m grateful for your co-operation.  Welsh Water returned to school yesterday to fix the leak they hadn’t managed to fix on Wednesday and we believe that the problem is now sorted.  We will let you know in good time if you need to bring your canoes to school!

Chinese New Year – Sunday 22nd January

We wish all who are celebrating, a Happy Chinese New Year for Sunday – we hope that you have a wonderful celebration as you welcome in The Year of the Rabbit.  Here is a link to a story read by Mrs Williams all about Chinese New Year https://lakeside-primary-school-cardiff.primarysite.media/media/chinese-new-year-story-1 which can also be found on the school website.  A big thank you to Mrs Thomas and the children for decorating our Lakeside Half Aker Wood with New Year greetings and tangerines.  Please see the attached photos.

    Industrial Action

I know that some of you have enquired about the published strike days for teachers.  As a reminder, the dates are: Wednesday 1st February, Tuesday 14th February, Wednesday 15th March and Thursday 16th March.  As yet, unfortunately, we have no information regarding the impact of the strikes and are waiting for guidance from the Local Authority.  As soon as we have any information, we will let you know.  Thank you.

NSPCC Number Day – Thursday 2nd February

Number Day actually falls on Friday 3rd February but as that is an Inset Day, we will mark Number Day on the Thursday instead.  As usual, pupils and staff are invited to come to school wearing something with numbers on it, and we will be collecting on the gate for the NSPCC.  Thank you.

Safer Internet Day – Tuesday 7th February

This week the Digital Learners pupil group have launched two competitions to go alongside Safer Internet Day.  One is to write a poem linked to this year’s Safer Internet Day theme, title "My Life Online"; the second competition is to create an animation about experiences online.  Work for the animation competition will take place in school.  There will be a 50p charge for each competition entry, and all money raised will be donated to Childline.  The deadline for entries is Internet Safety Day – 7th February.  Competition winners will be announced on Friday 10th February.

    Lakeside Citizens Handwashing poster competition

The competition has been judged and a winning design chosen, which will be reproduced and displayed in hand-washing areas of the school.  Thank you to those pupils who took part and well done to the runners up and the winners.

Pupil Leadership Team School Mascot competition

This competition has also been judged and a winning mascot design chosen which will now become Lakeside’s school mascot.  As above, thanks to all pupils who took part – we always have an excellent response to our competitions and the children love hearing who the winners are when they are announced.  Well done to the winner of this competition.

Wishing you all a pleasant weekend,

    Rachel Mitchell, Headteacher

    Fri 13 Jan 2023

    Dear Parent/Carer,

Happy New Year to all of you, even though it’s a very wet one! Thank you for sending children to school in suitable clothing for the time of year. This morning we were treated to a beautiful rainbow that appeared above the school and seemed to end in the Key Stage 2 Hall. It just shows that even on the dullest days, there is always something bright to look at.

It’s been a busy first week back with a visit from some dinosaurs to Reception children on Wednesday to launch their Dangerous Dinosaurs Learning Project. Not only were there dinosaurs in the Hall, but there were some on the roof too, according to the children, though this may have been down to the thunderstorm that took place at exactly the right time.

Year 1 pupils had a fun morning on Friday as they learned to do the Conga dance for a carnival celebration which is the launch of their Rio de Vida Learning Project all about Brazil.

    Kitchen back up and running!

Good news. The roof leak in the kitchen has been temporarily repaired so school meal choices and provision will be as normal next week, starting Monday. Thank you for your flexibility this week.

    PTA News

Many of you will have spotted new markings in the Nursery outdoor area – a roadway with zebra crossings, parking spaces and a shop, plus a brightly-coloured hopscotch game. Many thanks to the PTA for funding this – the children and staff are delighted with it.

    Protecting children from winter illnesses

In response to the current rises in circulation of Covid, flu and scarlet fever illnesses, we have received a link from County to Public Health Wales information about winter illnesses. The main advice is to keep children home from school if they are unwell.

    Pupils bringing medicines to school

If your child has prescription medicine that they need to take during school hours, please can you fill in the appropriate medical form at the school office. Pupils will need to give the medication to their teacher as soon as they arrive in class. The teacher will arrange for it to be put somewhere safe until it needs to be taken. Unfortunately, no other medicines can be brought to school by pupils. If your child needs to take non-prescribed medicine during the school day, such as paracetamol, you are welcome to come into school to administer it yourself.

    Lakeside Citizens Handwashing poster competition

The competition has now closed and we are delighted to have received many great entries. The Lakeside Citizens will start judging the competition shortly and the winners will be announced once the judging has been completed.

Pupil Leadership Team School Mascot competition

The closing date for this competition is next Thursday - 19th January. In today’s assembly, the team shared some of the entries already received, to encourage anyone who hasn’t entered to do so soon. The entries will be judged at the end of next week.

    Year 3 swimming

Year 3 Swimming Lessons will take place every day across two weeks, starting on Monday 6th March and ending Friday 17th March. The lessons will be at Splash Central. Details of arrangements will be sent to parents closer to the time.

    Lost Property

Please find attached some pictures of lost property we have in school at the moment. We would like to reunite the items with their owners, so please have a look and if you recognise anything, send a note in to Mrs Ullah and she will give the item(s) to your child on Thursdays and Fridays.

Wishing you all a pleasant weekend,

    Dear Parent/Carer,

What a wonderful week!  Nursery, Reception and Years 1, 3 and 6 shared their Christmas performances with families this week and each one was a joy.  The children did extremely well and really enjoyed themselves, as did their families and myself.  Many thanks to the staff for all their hard work and to parents/carers for providing costumes and props.  I’m looking forward to sharing the rest of the performances with families next week.

Thank you for sending your children into school in warm clothes – they all look very cosy in their hats, gloves, coats etc.  We’re hoping for milder weather on the weekend and into next week.

We send Happy Hanukkah wishes to all who are celebrating from this weekend.

    Lakeside Citizens video and competition

In today’s assemblies the Lakeside Citizens pupil group introduced two videos they have made to promote healthy lunchboxes and good hand hygiene.  There was a lot of laughter at the healthy lunchboxes video because it features Mr Vanstone and his very unhealthy lunchbox!  After the videos the Lakeside Citizens launched a competition to design a hand washing instruction poster for use throughout the school.

    Links with local community

It has been really lovely this Christmas to have been able to re-establish links with two local care homes.  The school choir sang at Llys Celyn this week and Year 1 visited Santa’s Grotto at Cartref.  Residents were delighted to see the children and hear them sing, also to receive cards that the children had made.

    Our post box

Thank you so much to one of our parents, who has decorated our post box with a beautiful Christmas scene.  It’s brought us many a smile on these cold mornings.

Wishing you all a pleasant weekend,
